History of the Earl Award
The Earl Award was named in honor of Earl Bargainner, a renowned scholar in mystery and detective fiction and one of the founding members of our caucus.  Prior to the conference, the award committee considers the papers from the previous conference's first-time presenters and selects a winner.  The winner receives a certificate and recognition at the area business meeting.

The Dove Award

2014 Winner

Christine A. Jackson, Ph.D., a professor in the Division of Humanities at Nova Southeastern University, has been selected to receive the George N. Dove Award for 2014.  The honor is bestowed for “outstanding contribution to the serious study of crime fiction” on behalf of the Mystery and Detective Fiction Caucus of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association.  The award is named for one of the caucus’s early members and a past President of the Popular Culture Association, George N. Dove, author of outstanding presentations, articles, and books on detective fiction, especially the police procedural.

The award recognizes Dr. Jackson’s work on crime fiction in presentations, articles, chapters, and books.  In particular, these include the two book-length critical studies, Myth and Ritual in Women’s Detective Fiction (2002) and The Tell-Tale Art: Poe in Modern Popular Culture (2012), contributions to the anthology Marcia Muller and the Female Private Eye (2008) that she also co-edited, and a contribution to the Clues: A Journal of Detection special issue on Irish crime fiction, “Vision and Blind Spots:  Characterization in Tana French’s Broken Harbor.”  In addition the committee noted Jackson’s presentations at PCA/ACA, both at the regional (mid-Atlantic and South) and national levels.

While the Dove is awarded for scholarship, committee members appreciated Jackson’s related recognition as a writer of crime fiction including the honorable mention in the Mystery Writers of America/Sisters in Crime short story contest for the New England Chapter and being named a finalist in the “Cozy Noir” short story contest for Spinetingler E-zine.  Jackson is at work on a critical study of Louisa May Alcott’s thrillers and an international spy novel.

The award was announced at the Mystery and Detective Fiction Caucus meeting April 17 during the PCA/ACA annual conference in Chicago (April 16-19, 2014).    For further information, please contact Dr. Nancy Ellen Talburt, Co-chair, Dove Award Committee, Mystery/Detection Fiction Caucus, National Popular Culture Association and American Culture Association (netal@uark.edu or 479-521-2922).
